Design and Construction of Cow Anti-Theft Device Using Affordable Technology

Joseph Etim Offiong, Fina Faithpraise

Abstract

The objective of the study is to design and construct an Atmega 328 microcontroller based anti-theft system using affordable technologies (global mobile communication system technology and global positioning satellite technology). The device will be used for securing cow against cow rustlers, monitoring and locating cow. The device circuit consists of Atmega 328 microcontroller, low-cost GPS and GSM receiver modules, capacitors, resistors, reset button, crystal oscillator and other passive components. And software is used for interfacing all the hardware and a web application. The Atmega 328 microcontroller is the brain of the anti-theft system where all peripherals are connected to on the board. The anti-theft system will be installed on the neck of the cow to be tracked. As the cow wonders, the system reads its current geographical position in longitude and latitude, and then sent via SMS to the herder’s phone number which was configured into the microcontroller. With enabling web application, the exact location of the cow can be located.
