Communication on-Chip

Abstract

Today with the rapid advancement in technology, electronics devices contain not only million-gate chips, but number of such chips also increased on a single platform termed as the system-on-chip (SoC). So the integration requires some attention because of the constraints like area, power, speed, etc. Processing cores on a single chip keep increasing with the current rate of advancements. Communication networks in such scenario are becoming highly important. Specialized buses ease the on-chip interconnection networks. In the SoC development, design reusability are used for interconnecting components with the buses. Design engineer standardizes the bus for future reuse around their particular modules. This eases the integration and reusability of module into new design, based around the same standard bus. In this paper, we give an insight of popular on-chip bus-based communication networks such as AMBA (advanced microcontroller bus architecture), core connect, wishbone, etc. The buses are characterized in respect to network topology, arbitration method, bus-width, and data transfers types.

Keywords: On-chip interconnection network, on-chip bus, on-chip communication protocol, SoC, AMBA (advanced microcontroller bus architecture)
